Fire units responded to a reported structure fire in the 1500 block of Park Avenue on Friday. DC Delnegro transmitted the working fire signal while responding due to the large cloud of black smoke visible in the sky. Upon arrival he reported heavy fire showing from side “B” of the two story wood frame structure. Upon further size-up it was noted that the fire had extended into the structure and was rapidly extending due to the explosion of a propane cylinder located on the exterior deck. That explosion was heard over the fire radio as the report was being transmitted. Engine 5 arrived and dropped a five inch supply line from the hydrant located at Park and Sprague Avenues. A 2 1/2 inch attack line was stretched by the company members and put into service on the bulk of the fire. Two additional 1 3/4 lines were deployed and put into service as interior crews made an advance into the fire building. Truck 7 arrived and threw ground ladders on sides A and D. All searches were negative. One engine from Plainfield served as the FAST team with an additional engine from New Market and Metuchen special called to the scene for relief along with a truck company from Colonia Fire Department. The EMS task force provided their bus for fire service personnel due to the weather conditions. Additional apparatus from North Stelton Fire, Edison Fire and Iselin were in quarters for coverage. No injuries were reported and the fire building was turned over to the Bureau of Fire Prevention for origin and cause investigation. Chief Scalera in command.
