This was a job on Route 287 in the summer of 1981. That’s former member Doug Pearson on the “booster line”. Although no front line South Plainfield Fire apparatus is presently outfitted with this size line, there was a time when the booster line was the primary line placed in service at most alarms. This policy was changed by Chief John Cotone sometime in 1981 when our leadership noticed the changes in the fires we were fighting and the 1 1/2 line was ordered to be the first line in service for commercial and industrial responses. Take a look at the picture and notice the changes in turnout gear and masks, or lack of them!
