Engine 5 responded into what eventually became a 5th alarm in the Borough of North Plainfield early this morning at the vacant Villa Maria rest home on Somerset Street. Heavy fire had possession of multiple floors of the structure. Engine 5 was assigned on the 2nd alarm to supply water from Somerset Street into the fire scene and to the truck company from Finderne. Multiple truck companies and heavy caliber streams were concentrated on the heavily involved structure. Collapse of sections of the building occurred and defensive operations were undertaken. A change back to defensive/offensive operations was conducted with companies advancing attack lines to Divisions 2 and 3 in attempts to keep the fire from spreading into other vacant sections of the structure via the cockloft. Companies from Somerset, Union and Middlesex counties operated on scene. An extended operation was expected to continue throughout the day.
