Engine 5 was dispatched to Port Carteret Road in Carteret today for a large scale Hazmat job. Carteret fire units were on scene from around 2:30 am dealing with a hazardous material incident. Drums within a warehouse were heating up with two exploding. Hazmat team members reported that the temperature of the drums was exceeding 350 degrees. Engine 5 arrived and stretched a three inch line to a stationary deck gun to cool down the drums. Consistent monitoring revealed that as soon as the water was removed that the temperature once again climbed upward. The chemical manufacturer was on scene consulting with the Middlesex County Hazmat team in an effort to inhibit the reaction. South Plainfield units remained on scene until they were relieved by another mutual aid engine company.
