Fire units were dispatched to the Harris Steel yard on New Market Avenue for a worker trapped under a steel beam. Arriving units were directed to the rear yard adjacent to the rail line. One worker was found heavily entrapped under a steel beam weighing approximately 25,000 pounds. Command was established and special called for the County USAR Team along with a heavy rescue (Squad) from Plainfield fire. Additional units from New Market Fire, Metuchen and North Stelton fire were relocated into quarters for coverage. Members secured the steel beam and utilized numerous amounts of cribbing to stabilize the beam. The Fire Department made use of the overhead crane and the experience of the operator and foreman in setting the chains to perform a lift of the beam at the one end. EMS and paramedic units examined the patient and started treatment as extrication was underway. The load was lifted and the trapped patient removed and placed into the stokes basket and handed off to EMS. The patient was transported to Frankin School where an awaiting helicopter transported the victim to a trauma center. New Market fire handled the landing zone. DC DelNegro in command.
