It is with deep regret that the South Plainfield Fire Department announces the passing of former Deputy Chief Mario Abbruzzese. Deputy Chief Abbruzzese joined the department in October of 1968 having been a member of the Junior program in his youth. He obtained the ranks of Lieutenant, Captain and Deputy Chief serving the citizens of South Plainfield for 49 years. Chief Abbruzzese was instrumental in the planning and construction of the existing South Plainfield Volunteer Fire Department Memorial located on Maple and Plainfield Avenues. He was also assigned to the Office of Emergency Management as a Deputy Coordinator. He was an exempt member and a life member of the State of New Jersey association. Mario was also a Vietnam veteran and served his country with honor. His quick wit and contagious smile will be greatly missed. He leaves behind his wife Maureen and daughter Renee.
