Central dispatch received a radio call from an EMS unit reporting a structure fire in the 2000 block of Park Avenue on Christmas Eve as they were returning from a run. Fire units were dispatched to the Park Avenue Diner for smoke coming from the building. Arriving police units updated dispatch and confirmed fire showing from the roof on side “C” of the building. The dinner which is normally open 24/7 had closed for the holiday at 15:00 hours. DC Campbell arrived and transmitted the working fire signal and ordered Engine 5 to drop a supply line from the hydrant on Park and Walter Streets and proceed onto Warren Street. Truck 7 was setup on side “C” and put the bucket with a crew to the roof to deal with the roof fire. Two lines were stretched and put into operation. The first line was stretched to the interior and into the kitchen area and used to suppress the kitchen fire which had now extended up the duct work and to the roof. The second line was put to work on the roof along with saws to expose the area around the ventilators which were heavily involved in fire. One engine from Plainfield was special called to the scene and was assigned to search. All searches were negative. Extended overhaul was necessary due to the fire extending to the roof and spreading horizontally through the roof members. The fire was placed under control and turned over to the Bureau for origin and cause investigation. Chief Scalera in command.
