Attached is a photo of Chief Delaney putting the first test call over the Boroughs new “fire phone” notification system. The system replaced the whistle as the primary notification device and was installed in every members home as well as a few additional primary locations. The fire dispatcher would lift the phone and voice record the location of the alarm. All phones in the homes of the members rang at the same time announcing the location of the alarm. This system was in service well into the 1980’s and was replaced by the present Motorola paging system. Along with Chief Delaney in the photo is exempt member Richard Kennedy the future mayor of South Plainfield.
